[narrator] OK, here's how to teach your dog to roll over. [onscreen action] Woman gets dog to lie down. [narrator] First, give your dog the signal to down. [onscreen action] Dog's hips shift to the right. [narrator] Next, wait for his hips to shift to the left or right so he's in a more relaxed position. This will give you a better feel for which direction he'd be more comfortable rolling. [onscreen action] Woman demonstrates hip rolling technique. [narrator] If your dog is reluctant to swing his hips to one side or the other, try this. Place a tasty treat in your closed fist, and slowly wave your arm in front of his nose, moving left to right around his head until his hips relax in one direction. [onscreen action] Woman gets dog to roll over. Woman praises the dog and gives him a treat. [narrator] Now, move the treat in your closed fist from your dog's nose back toward his shoulders. Continue to move the treat across his shoulders until he lays on his side, and then rolls over. Tell him what a great dog he his, and then give him the treat. [onscreen action] Woman repeats the roll over trick. [narrator] Only roll your dog on soft surfaces like carpet or grass so he doesn't hurt his back. Some dogs don't like to roll all the way over, it can be uncomfortable for them, so try a few times. If he doesn't seem to want to go all the way over, consider a different trick. Repeat these steps a few times, each time moving a little faster. [onscreen action] Dog rolls over without treat. [narrator] With a little practice, your dog can do this.
